A Library Serving Its Community

The Carmel Clay West Branch Library plays an essential role as a daily resource for its community, supporting learning, gathering, and access to information. Like many well-used civic spaces, its systems and key touchpoints needed to evolve to keep pace with operational demands and future goals.

Aging Systems, Future Expectations

Over time, core infrastructure and user-facing elements began to limit performance. Aging HVAC systems, an inefficient reception layout, and the need to support future sustainability initiatives created a gap between how the building functioned and what it needed to deliver moving forward.

Upgrading Performance at Every Scale

Synthesis led architectural and structural upgrades to align the facility with current and future needs. Mechanical systems and controls were replaced to improve performance, while structural and electrical improvements were integrated to support a future rooftop solar array. On the south elevation, new aluminum-clad wood windows enhance durability and performance. Inside, the main reception desk was reimagined as a compact, circular layout that improves circulation, introduces sit/stand functionality, and utilizes durable materials suited to daily use. To support solar integration, the team worked closely with local planning authorities to develop an extended parapet and new cornice, concealing the array while preserving the building’s architectural character and meeting zoning requirements.

The result is a library that performs more efficiently, supports staff more effectively, and is positioned for long-term sustainability. By aligning infrastructure, user experience, and future-ready systems, the upgrades ensure the building continues to serve its community with greater flexibility and resilience.
