In Rensselaer, one of the state’s oldest and largest volunteer fire departments plays a vital role in serving both the city and surrounding communities. As the Jasper County seat, the department’s facility supports not only emergency response, but also training, gatherings, and long-standing community traditions.

When Infrastructure Struggles to Perform

Over time, the existing fire station’s infrastructure began to fail, limiting the department’s ability to operate effectively and support its expanding role. The challenge was to create a new facility that could meet current demands, accommodate community use, and remain adaptable for the future, all within a strict budget.

Designing for Service, Efficiency, and Growth

Synthesis partnered with the fire department and the City of Rensselaer to design a new station rooted in both tradition and forward-thinking performance. A pre-engineered metal building system was leveraged to maximize budget efficiency while meeting programmatic needs. The facility incorporates a training and conference room, a museum, updated communication systems, and a site designed to accommodate large community events like the department’s annual pancake fundraiser. The architecture balances durability and civic presence, with a brick base conveying permanence, a metal panel clerestory reducing perceived scale, and a formal portico entry that welcomes visitors. Red and white materials reference local school colors, reinforcing community identity.

The new fire station provides a flexible, resilient environment that supports both emergency operations and community engagement. Designed with room for future equipment, sleeping quarters, and growth, it ensures the department can continue to evolve while remaining a strong and visible presence at the heart of the community.
