Eli Lilly NW Quad Code Studies
A Decade of Code Strategy Shaping a Complex Campus
A Connected Campus System
The NW Quad functioned as a network of 16 interconnected buildings, supporting a range of uses across the campus. This connectivity was central to how the complex operated, shaping circulation, access, and day-to-day functionality.
Code Requirements Threatening Connectivity
As building codes evolved, the interconnected nature of the Quad created significant challenges. Standard solutions risked forcing separation between buildings, disrupting the very system that made the campus functional. The challenge was to maintain connectivity while meeting stringent life safety and code requirements.
Navigating Code Through Strategy and Collaboration
Synthesis initiated a comprehensive code study, surveying all buildings and developing updated base drawings to accurately capture existing conditions. From this foundation, the team worked closely with state officials to negotiate an exit strategy that balanced compliance with operational needs, securing necessary variances to preserve connectivity wherever possible. While one building was ultimately separated, the remaining structures were strategically altered or expanded to align with the approved approach. Over the following decade, Synthesis guided implementation, with code specialist Bruce Anderson serving as the primary liaison for ongoing compliance coordination.
A Campus That Works and Complies
The NW Quad now operates within a clear, state-approved framework that maintains its interconnected functionality while meeting code requirements. Through long-term strategy and careful execution, the project transforms a complex regulatory challenge into a coordinated, functional solution.
