Eskenazi Health Ambulatory Care Building Interior Fit-Out
Advancing a Legacy of Care
Eskenazi Health’s history dates back to 1855, when construction began at what is now 10th Street and Indiana Avenue in response to a smallpox epidemic in Indianapolis. The facility opened in 1859 and served the community for decades. Today, the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital campus continues that legacy as Indiana’s oldest and largest public healthcare system, providing care for more than 1 million outpatient visits each year. While the system has evolved over time, its mission remains constant: caring for all the people of Marion County.
Synthesis served as Architect of Record for the interior architectural fit-out of the seven-story, 200,000-square-foot Ambulatory Care Building (ACB). Our work included programming, planning, and design of the lower level through the sixth floor, along with coordination of building utilities, structural systems, and the garage connector as they impact the interior environment. All components were delivered in alignment with the schedule and budget established by the Executive Architect, HOK.
The ACB brings together a wide range of clinical services within a single, highly coordinated facility. The program includes an outpatient pharmacy, conference center, correctional holding center, and primary care, dental, senior care, and optometry clinics. Shared specialty clinics support surgery, ENT, orthopedics, urology, pain/anesthesia, neurology, dermatology, bariatrics, special medicine, and the Center for Youth & Adults with Conditions of Childhood.
Additional program elements include an infusion clinic with eight infusion bays and four private infusion rooms; an OB/GYN clinic; the Women’s Center of Excellence; and a breast imaging clinic with four mammography rooms and two ultrasound rooms. The facility also includes two C-section/operating rooms with five recovery bays, 12 labor/delivery/recovery rooms, 35 NICU patient rooms, a triage unit with six exam rooms, 20 postpartum rooms with a baby nursery, and 15 antepartum rooms, all supported by dedicated nursing and clinical spaces.
