A Proven Venue, Still Performing

The 500 Ballroom at the Indiana Convention Center has long been a reliable, high-performing event space. Known for its balance of scale and intimacy, it consistently delivered successful experiences across a wide range of events.

When “Working Well” Isn’t Enough

As expectations for event venues continue to evolve, maintaining performance is no longer sufficient. To remain competitive, the ballroom needed to offer greater flexibility, improved technology integration, and a more compelling experience, all without losing the qualities that made it successful in the first place.

Performance as the Foundation

The renovation began with performance. Working alongside an acoustical consultant, the design team addressed bass frequency resonance while preserving the room’s existing sound quality. Acoustic treatments were seamlessly integrated into the ceiling, and custom wall panels were developed to enhance both performance and architectural expression. Lighting was reimagined with new LED systems, allowing the space to adapt to a wide range of events while improving control and ambiance. Layered into these upgrades, the design draws from Indiana’s identity, with custom carpet patterns referencing the energy of the Indianapolis 500, the movement of the Wabash River, and “Back Home Again in Indiana,” alongside sycamore bark–inspired wall treatments that add warmth and texture.

A Ballroom Built to Compete

The result is a more flexible, higher-performing venue that adapts seamlessly to different events while delivering a stronger sense of experience. It remains intimate yet refined, familiar yet elevated, ensuring the 500 Ballroom continues to meet evolving expectations and compete at the highest level for years to come.
