Indiana University Health Multi-Discipline Renovations
Optimizing the Complexity of Surgical Care
A Long-Term Partnership in Surgical Care
For over a decade, Indiana University Health and Synthesis have collaborated on a series of renovations within the Surgery Department at the Methodist campus. What began as a master plan has evolved into a phased effort to support a wide range of surgical specialties while maintaining continuous operations.
Complex Systems, Limited Flexibility
As technology advanced and demands on surgical spaces increased, existing layouts began to limit efficiency, circulation, and expansion. Renovating an active surgical environment introduced additional challenges, balancing patient safety, infection control, and operational continuity while adapting to evolving clinical needs.
Designing Around Operations, Not Just Space
The project began with a comprehensive master plan focused on improving circulation, maximizing usable space, and integrating new technologies across specialties including general surgery, cardiothoracic, neurology, orthopedics, and more. Phased renovations allowed each area to be upgraded strategically while maintaining ongoing operations. Circulation paths were rerouted and consolidated to improve staff efficiency and support sterile environments, creating opportunities for expansion. A full-scale mock-up of Operating Room 27 became a key tool, allowing surgeons, nurses, and staff to engage directly with the design and provide real-time feedback, accelerating decision-making and ensuring the space aligned with clinical workflows. Throughout, careful planning addressed construction sequencing, infection control, and operational continuity.
A More Efficient, Patient-Focused Environment
The Surgery Department now operates with improved flow, expanded capabilities, and spaces that better support both staff and patient care. By aligning design with real-world use and clinical input, the project delivers a more adaptable and efficient surgical environment, built to evolve alongside advancing medical technologies.
