A Landmark of Honor and History

Built in 1924, the Indiana War Memorial stands as a neoclassical landmark honoring Hoosier veterans. Over time, its museum has grown beyond its original intent, expanding to house exhibits and artifacts that continue to tell the story of service and sacrifice.

When Growth Creates Challenges

As the museum evolved, spaces originally designed for meetings and banquets were repurposed for exhibits, unintentionally compromising exit paths. While a reflection of the museum’s success, these changes introduced critical challenges that needed to be addressed without diminishing the building’s historic integrity.

Preserving History While Restoring Performance

Synthesis is leading a comprehensive restoration effort focused on both preservation and life safety. Original elements, including windows, bronze doors, and entryways, are being carefully restored and secured. At the same time, the team is addressing life safety concerns through detailed analysis and strategic improvements. Historic resources, such as the 1923 hand-drawn blueprints by Walker and Weeks, inform the approach, ensuring interventions remain aligned with the building’s original design intent. Through close collaboration with leadership and stakeholders, Synthesis is also conducting a functional assessment, identifying key assets and challenges and translating them into a clear, value-based roadmap for the future.
