Indianapolis Airport Authority Luminaires
Wayfinding, Reimagined as Experience
Finding Your Way Through the Terminal
At Indianapolis International Airport, travelers move through the terminal with a shared goal, reaching their gate efficiently and confidently. Within the central Civic Plaza, this moment of decision, choosing between concourses and navigating security, is one of the most critical points in the passenger journey.
A Simple Question Without a Clear Answer
As part of the Terminal Optimization Program, a key challenge emerged: passengers frequently asked, “Where is Concourse A or B?” Existing wayfinding did not fully support quick, intuitive decision-making in a high-traffic environment, creating friction at a moment where clarity matters most.
Turning Wayfinding into an Experience
The Luminaire Project reimagines wayfinding as both infrastructure and identity. Two 40-foot LED displays were strategically positioned within Civic Plaza to clearly identify concourses and guide passengers toward TSA checkpoints, complete with real-time wait times. Their height and placement were carefully studied from the traveler’s perspective to ensure visibility and impact. Constructed with Indiana wood alongside steel and limestone, the structures balance warmth with durability. Beyond function, the displays come alive through dynamic animations, celebrating events like March Madness, highlighting the city’s skyline, and referencing the Indianapolis 500, turning a moment of navigation into a moment of connection.
Clarity, Connection, and a Stronger First Impression
The Luminaire Project transforms a common point of confusion into an intuitive and memorable experience. By combining clear wayfinding with a sense of place, it helps travelers move with confidence while reinforcing the identity of Indianapolis. The result is an airport environment that not only functions more effectively, but leaves a lasting impression on everyone passing through it.
