Indianapolis Airport Authority Restroom Façades
Creating Joy in the Journey
Finding Your Way, Instinctively
At Indianapolis International Airport, wayfinding plays a critical role in shaping the traveler experience. In a fast-paced, unfamiliar environment, even simple needs, like locating a restroom, should feel intuitive and stress-free.
When Wayfinding Becomes Friction
Traditional signage often blends into the background, forcing travelers to stop, search, and second-guess. In moments of urgency or stress, this lack of clarity can disrupt the overall experience, turning what should be effortless into something frustrating.
Turning Wayfinding into a Moment of Delight
Synthesis reimagined restroom identification as an opportunity for engagement. Inspired by globally recognized iconography, the team designed large-scale “Peek-a-Boo” façade installations that act as both markers and memorable moments. Playful figurines, constructed from metal, light, and acrylic, emerge within the architecture, glowing softly and catching the eye from a distance. Crafted in collaboration with specialized fabricators, these installations go beyond function, introducing a sense of humor and surprise while remaining seamlessly integrated into the airport environment.
A More Human Travel Experience
The Peek-a-Boo façades transform a basic need into an intuitive and enjoyable interaction. By combining clarity with character, they reduce stress, improve navigation, and reinforce a sense of place rooted in Hoosier hospitality. What could have been overlooked becomes a small but meaningful moment that enhances the overall journey through the airport.
