Indianapolis Airport Authority Terminal Building Elevators Branding & Theming
A Smoother and Safer Journey, By Design
Moving Through the Terminal
At Indianapolis International Airport, vertical circulation is essential to the passenger journey. Elevators connect key areas across the terminal, including the Ground Transportation Center, pedestrian bridges, baggage claim, and Civic Plaza, supporting accessibility and movement throughout the facility.
When Essential Isn’t Visible
Despite their importance, elevator locations lacked a clear and consistent identity. Wayfinding across multiple banks had become fragmented, leaving passengers uncertain about where to go or how spaces connected. What should have been intuitive moments of movement instead introduced hesitation and confusion.
Making Wayfinding Visible and Cohesive
Synthesis, in collaboration with Selbert Perkins Design, reimagined the elevator experience as both functional and experiential. The team evaluated elevator locations across Levels 1 and 2 and developed a cohesive system that integrates branding, signage, and visual identity into each location. Through careful consideration of circulation, safety, sightlines, materials, and color, elevators were transformed into clear visual markers within the terminal. The process included concept development, schematic design, and detailed documentation, supported by cost analysis and implementation planning.
Clearer Movement, Stronger Experience
With our design implemented, the elevators will function as intuitive landmarks within the airport, improving navigation while reinforcing the terminal’s overall identity. By aligning wayfinding with design and branding, the project enhances accessibility, reduces uncertainty, and contributes to a more seamless and welcoming passenger experience.
