Juan Solomon Park & Lift Station

Adding Value Where It's Least Expected
Infrastructure in the Park

At Juan Solomon Park, a necessary piece of infrastructure, a lift station, was part of the park’s functional landscape. Traditionally, these structures are housed in utilitarian concrete block buildings, designed to serve a purpose but not contribute to the surrounding environment.

When Utility Disrupts Experience

In a community park setting, a standard lift station risks feeling out of place, interrupting the character and experience of the space. The challenge was to integrate essential infrastructure without diminishing the park’s role as a place for gathering, play, and connection.

Reimagining Infrastructure as Amenity

With a relatively modest additional investment, the lift station was transformed into an architectural feature that enhances the park. A natural stone veneer façade, articulated at varying heights, helps break down the scale and blend the structure into its surroundings. A sloped green roof, the first on a city-owned building, introduces both visual and environmental benefits, managing runoff, improving insulation, and incorporating diverse plantings. Beyond the structure itself, the project expanded to include a community room with floor-to-ceiling views of a brightly colored playground, along with gathering spaces, trail connections, and recreational amenities. Sustainable strategies such as permeable paving, bio-swales, and recycled rubber playground surfacing further reinforce the project’s environmental performance.

Infrastructure That Adds Value

What was once purely functional becomes a meaningful part of the park experience. The lift station now contributes to the identity, usability, and sustainability of the space, demonstrating how even the most utilitarian elements can elevate a community environment when thoughtfully designed.
