Medical Office Building
Designing Care Around the Patient
A New Model for Patient Experience
As healthcare systems evolve, patient experience has become a central driver in the design of medical office buildings. This project brought multiple clinics together into a single facility, creating an opportunity to rethink how patients, providers, and care teams interact within a shared environment.
Care Environments That Create Friction
Traditional clinic layouts often blur the line between patient-facing and clinical operations, leading to inefficiencies, confusion, and a less personalized experience. The challenge was to create a system that improves flow, enhances privacy, and elevates the overall experience without compromising clinical performance.
Separating Experience from Operations
Using Synthesis’ Responsible Creativity approach, the design introduced a clear distinction between patient “on-stage” areas and clinical “off-stage” zones. This separation allows care teams to operate efficiently behind the scenes while presenting a calm, concierge-like experience to patients. Intuitive wayfinding is reinforced through both site planning and interior organization, anchored by a strong central axis and connector that links the building to its surroundings. Architecturally, the design elevates simple materials like limestone, metal, and glass through thoughtful composition, including a central stone element that appears to float, creating a distinctive and memorable identity.
A More Intuitive, Patient-Centered Environment
The result is a medical office concept that prioritizes clarity, comfort, and efficiency. By aligning spatial organization with the patient journey, the design creates a more seamless and supportive care experience, demonstrating how thoughtful planning can improve both operations and satisfaction.
