Leveling Up an Untapped Student Recreation Space
Untapped Space Within the Rec Center
At Purdue University’s Cordova Recreation & Wellness Center, portions of the lower level remained underutilized, offering an opportunity to better support student life and recreation.
Disconnected and Underperforming Areas
The existing basement spaces lacked clear circulation, modern infrastructure, and a defined purpose. Without upgrades, these areas could not support emerging student interests or provide a meaningful extension of the Rec Center experience.
Transforming Space into a Tech-Ready Destination
Synthesis helped facilitate the lower level as a dynamic gaming lounge, reconfiguring rooms and opening connections to improve flow and visibility. The project integrated new finishes, ceilings, lighting, and upgraded mechanical, electrical, and technology systems to support more than two dozen gaming stations, AV equipment, and robust data connectivity. Accessibility and life-safety improvements were incorporated throughout, including updates to adjacent spaces. The team led coordination across all disciplines, guiding the project from design through construction administration to ensure a seamless and fully integrated result.
A New Hub for Student Engagement
The renovated space now functions as a flexible, high-performance environment that activates previously overlooked square footage and enhances the student experience. Recognized with a 2025 NIRSA Outstanding Facilities Award, the project demonstrates how targeted interventions can transform underutilized areas into vibrant, relevant destinations.
