Biochemistry Building Office of the State Chemist Lab Renovation
Upgrading Performance Within an Aging Framework
A Facility with a Long History
The Office of the Indiana State Chemist operates within an 18,000-square-foot facility composed of buildings dating to the 1930s and 1970s. While the space had supported research and sample processing for decades, it no longer aligned with current laboratory standards or workplace expectations.
Aging Infrastructure, Modern Demands
As the need to expand and modernize grew, the existing facility presented significant challenges. Outdated layouts, limited daylight, and aging systems made it difficult to support contemporary lab practices. At the same time, the building needed to remain partially operational throughout the process, adding complexity to both design and construction.
Reworking the Existing to Perform Like New
Synthesis led a comprehensive renovation strategy that balanced performance upgrades with the constraints of the existing structure. The building envelope was improved to enhance daylight, while interior spaces were reconfigured to support modern laboratory workflows and equipment. Strategic zoning separated work areas to improve safety and functionality. To streamline construction and minimize disruption, a companion swing space was designed and retrofitted nearby, allowing operations to relocate in a single move and enabling a more efficient renovation process.
A Modern Lab Within an Existing Framework
The renovated facility supports current and future operational needs while maintaining continuity of service. By working within the limitations of the existing buildings and introducing strategic upgrades, the project delivers a more efficient, functional, and adaptable environment for the Office of the Indiana State Chemist.
