Purdue University Turfgrass Center Addition Feasibility Study

Reinvesting in a Legacy of Research
A Hub for Research and Community

At William H. Daniel Turfgrass Research & Diagnostic Center, Purdue University supports research, education, and community engagement in turfgrass management. Since its establishment in 1996, the center has grown into a vital resource, connecting academic work with industry through training programs and events like Turf & Landscape Field Day.

Growth Without Supporting Infrastructure

While research and programming expanded over time, the site’s infrastructure remained largely unchanged for more than two decades. This created challenges around safety, operational efficiency, and the ability to support both individual research and larger community engagement.

A Strategic Plan for Safety, Research, and Engagement

Synthesis led a comprehensive feasibility study and master planning effort grounded in stakeholder engagement, peer benchmarking, and infrastructure analysis. Through an iterative process, the team developed a phased strategy focused on three key goals: improving safety by separating incompatible functions, enhancing research through more efficient and functional spaces, and strengthening engagement through upgraded group environments and communication tools. The resulting plan provides a clear roadmap for future construction and site improvements, aligning physical space with the center’s evolving needs.

A Stronger Platform for the Future

The Turfgrass Center is now positioned to better support research, education, and community connection. With a strategic framework in place, future improvements will enhance safety, expand capabilities, and strengthen its role as a bridge between Purdue’s work and the broader agricultural community.
