West Lafayette WWTP Lab/Admin Building

Connecting Infrastructure, Workplace, & Community

Growing Beyond the Existing Facility

The existing wastewater treatment facility has served its team well, but as operations and staffing grow, its administrative spaces need to grow with them. Plans for a new office building create an opportunity to provide more room for daily work while strengthening the facility’s connection to the nearby public trail and surrounding landscape.

More Space, Light, and Flexibility

The existing office provides a functional foundation, but limited laboratory space, oversized storage, and changing workplace needs presented opportunities for improvement. The new facility needed to accommodate a growing team while creating brighter, more open spaces for collaboration, testing, meetings, and everyday operations.

Opening the Facility to Its Surroundings

The proposed design brings offices, an expanded laboratory, conference and event space, and informal gathering areas together within an open, light-filled environment targeting LEED Silver certification. Glass, brick, metal panels, and expressed mass-timber elements create a straightforward material palette, while an open break area encourages employees to gather throughout the day. At the rear, a patio extends toward the adjacent woods and trail, creating an outdoor amenity envisioned for both staff and public use.

A Workplace Designed for What’s Next

The concept transforms the administrative side of the treatment facility into a more welcoming, connected workplace designed around the team’s future needs. With greater laboratory capacity, flexible gathering spaces, access to nature, and stronger community connections, the new building is envisioned as both a functional workplace and a more approachable piece of public infrastructure.
