Restoring a Piece of History at the Indiana War Memorial
Restoring a Piece of History at the Indiana War Memorial
For more than 20 years, the original bronze doors at the Indiana War Memorial’s East and South entrances have remained inoperable. Dating back to the 1930s, the doors suffered decades of wear and water damage that caused their original bronze extrusions to split, compromising their functionality.
Now, Synthesis and BOMAR are working together to restore these historic entrances. The team is carefully recreating the broken extrusions using new materials that faithfully replicate the originals while correcting the flaws that contributed to their deterioration. The result will preserve the memorial’s historic character while restoring the doors to full functionality.
This restoration marks the final step in a larger investment in the memorial’s life safety improvements, an effort initiated by Synthesis and the State of Indiana in 2016. These behind-the-scenes photos offer a glimpse into the craftsmanship bringing an important piece of Indiana’s architectural history back to life.
