Synthesis is leading the architectural and structural design for a series of upgrades to the Carmel Clay West Branch Library. The project includes HVAC system and controls replacement, structural and electrical improvements to support a future solar array, and new aluminum-clad wood windows at the south elevation. A key component involved redesigning the main reception desk, replacing an outdated configuration with a compact, circular layout that improves circulation, incorporates sit/stand functionality, and uses long-lasting, durable materials tailored to daily library operations.
To support the library’s sustainability goals, we coordinated with local planning authorities to secure approval for rooftop solar integration, a process that required creative architectural concealment. By designing an extended parapet and new cornice, we successfully screened the future solar array while preserving the building’s exterior character and meeting zoning requirements.
