Indiana Convention Center 500 Ballroom Renovation

Location:

Indianapolis, IN

Synthesis revitalized the 500 Ballroom at the Indiana Convention Center, transforming an aging venue into a high-performance, culturally resonant event space. Originally renovated in the 1980s, the ballroom required both technical upgrades and a refreshed design to meet contemporary expectations for flexibility, technology, and atmosphere.

Working closely with an acoustical consultant, our team addressed challenges with bass frequency resonance while preserving the space’s renowned sound quality. Acoustic treatments were seamlessly integrated into the existing ceiling, and custom wall panels were designed to enhance both performance and architectural character. Modern LED lighting replaced outdated fixtures, adding flexibility for a wide range of events and improving overall ambiance.

The design also celebrated Indiana’s heritage, with custom carpet patterns inspired by the Indianapolis 500, the Wabash River, and the lyrics of “Back Home Again in Indiana.” Sycamore bark–inspired wall treatments and refreshed drapery added warmth and cultural resonance, creating a swanky, mid-sized ballroom that feels intimate, refined, and deeply rooted in place.
