In summer 2022, the Indianapolis Public Library Foundation and IPL staff engaged Synthesis to develop a concept for a new children’s area at the existing Decatur Branch. Prompted by a potential donor with a lifelong background in education, the initiative aimed to enhance services for the branch’s growing youth population and address the need for an updated, engaging children’s environment.
Using our Responsible Creativity process, Synthesis collaborated closely with library staff and the foundation representative to develop a concept rooted in familiar literary references. The design draws inspiration from the illustrated maps found in beloved children’s books such as Winnie the Pooh and The Chronicles of Narnia. The result is a whimsical and educational environment that invites curiosity, supports early literacy, and encourages conversation around storytelling, geography, and imagination.
This project reflects IndyPL’s ongoing commitment to equity, access, and community-responsive design— creating spaces that meet patrons where they are and grow alongside their needs.
