Simon Moon Park
Location: Westfield, IN
At Synthesis, we believe in the power of design to transform landscapes and strengthen communities. That vision is coming to life in the Simon Moon Park expansion, where we're helping shape its evolution from a modest 5.85-acre park into a thriving 25-acre destination in collaboration with the City of Westfield Parks and Recreation Department and V3 Companies.
This once-utilitarian site—formerly home to a wastewater facility—is being reimagined as a dynamic, immersive natural retreat, reconnecting people with the land and one another.
Phase 1: Laying the Foundation for Connection
Launched in April 2024, Phase 1 set the stage for a more accessible, inviting park experience. We reshaped the iconic sledding hill, expanded the entry and parking, and reopened the Midland Trace Trail, seamlessly integrating it with the park’s new stormwater-fed ponds.
With an emphasis on movement and exploration, we introduced:
-
Realigned trails for safer, more intuitive pathways
-
New fishing piers & boardwalks that enhance interaction with the water
-
Ecological improvements that restore the site’s natural rhythm
These foundational upgrades ensure the park welcomes visitors with renewed vitality.
Phase 2: A Vision for Play, Learning & Gathering
Slated to begin in June 2025, Phase 2 will transform Simon Moon Park into an even richer community hub. Inspired by the whimsical follies of 18th-century Stourhead Gardens, our design will blend architecture and nature, sparking curiosity and engagement.
Key features will include:
-
A state-of-the-art playground designed for imaginative exploration
-
An outdoor education classroom, fostering hands-on learning
-
Expanded shelters and shade structures, offering more places to gather
-
Additional boardwalks, weaving through the landscape for immersive experiences
The heart of the expansion will be two architectural focal points:
-
The Sledding Pavilion, a warm, inviting shelter at the base of the hill
-
A sculptural multi-tiered butterfly-roof shelter, designed for rainwater collection and ecological harmony

Our design philosophy draws inspiration from the 18th-century gardens at Stourhead, utilizing architectural “follies” to engage visitors with the natural landscape. Key elements include an outdoor shelter with a multi-tiered butterfly roof and rainwater collection system, and a Sledding Pavilion providing a warm space by the sledding hill.
Community Enhancements: A Park for Everyone
Beyond its trails and play areas, Simon Moon Park is becoming a true gathering place. We’ve expanded the picnic and playground areas, adding new shelters and shaded spaces that make it a more welcoming, functional destination for families, friends, and nature lovers.
These enhancements reflect our deep commitment to creating sustainable, engaging environments that foster connection and environmental stewardship.

At Synthesis, we don’t just design spaces—we craft experiences that inspire, endure, and bring people together. Simon Moon Park is a testament to that philosophy, and we’re proud to help shape its future.
